Whether your goal is to get into shape, compete, or simply to have fun, California Wushu Academy is dedicated to bringing out the best in you. Our core wushu program, much like the children’s and Little Stars programs, emphasizes the development of basics and can train teens and adults to become wushu athletes that are prepared to compete if they desire. These classes also further emphasize your Wushu development in terms of rhythm, spirit, form, details, and flavor.

Of wushu’s many styles and disciplines, the following are taught as part of the core curriculum at CWA:

Changquan (long fist): This style involves movements that are both powerful and graceful. One must be agile and flexible in addition to having speed and power, as the style incorporates very high jumps, kicking, striking, opening, dodging, spinning, folding and undulating techniques, most of which are done with maximum extension of the limbs.

Nanquan (southern fist): Based on the southern styles of Chinese martial arts, nanquan’s movements are quick and powerful as in changquan, but with more firmness and stability.  The footwork is steady and agile, and the body remains straight and centered.  A few leg and jumping techniques and are employed, but the style relies more on upper body techniques in general. In addition, for enhancing the effectiveness of strikes, a sound is sometimes yelled when applying power.

Daoshu (broad sword): Broad sword technique employs twining and wrapping the head, chopping, hacking, uppercutting and parrying techniques. The movements are swift, fierce and forceful.

Jianshu (straight sword): With the straight sword, hacking, tilting, pointing and thrusting techniques are integrated with balancing and turning of the body.  It is characterized by quick, light and rhythmic movements and changeable bodywork.

Gunshu (staff, cudgel): Staff forms include circling, chopping, poking, uppercutting and figure-8 techniques.  The weapon strikes on a large plane, and both ends of the weapon can be used in attack. So the movements are very swift and powerful.

Qiangshu (spear): This is a discipline which mainly includes parrying outward, parrying inward, thrusting, striking downward, tilting, coiling and figure-8 techniques.  It has been said that spearplay “…resembles and undulating dragon. but the spear is thrust in a straight line”.
